Is Hiroshima Okonomiyaki Worth It? Locals Say Skip the Famous Shops — "The Tiny Neighborhood Joints Are Several Times Better, and Cheaper"

Under a viral rundown of Hiroshima's four most famous okonomiyaki shops, the top local comment (438 likes) says the obviously tourist-oriented picks lose to the tiny neighborhood joints, which are "several times tastier — and cheaper." "These are all shops locals don't go to" (205 likes) sums up the pushback, but the tone is affectionate, not angry: every Hiroshima native keeps a personal favorite shop (331 likes), the really good ones stay secret so they don't get crowded (157 likes), and okonomiyaki is supposed to be an everyday ¥700 niku-tama-soba, not something you queue for. A few regulars push back — famous Hassho and Koshida really are that good, they say — and locals name a dozen real shops they'd send you to instead.

The tiny neighborhood okonomiyaki places are several times tastier than these obviously tourist-oriented shops — and cheaper on top of that.

What locals said (excerpted from 703)

  • These are all shops locals don't go to.

  • For tourists, this lineup is a solid 100 points. The nice thing about Hiroshima's okonomiyaki scene is that the genuinely great shops locals go to and the tourist-facing shops are completely separate worlds.

  • Every Hiroshima local has found a shop they're attached to. Everyone's different, and everyone's right.

  • I can't tell you where the really good shops are. They'd get crowded!!

  • People from Hiroshima don't really name a recommended shop — they just say everywhere is good. At the very least, nobody has ever actively pushed the shops in this video on me. If you keep pressing, they'll finally go "well, then..." and offer up Hassho or something.

  • Us Hiroshima folks figure our favorite shops are already good and busy enough, and we don't want them any more crowded — so when people keep asking, we just casually palm them off with one of the famous places.

  • So expensive! Okonomiyaki should just be a ¥700-or-so niku-tama-soba.

    たっけ〜 お好み焼きなんて700円くらいの肉玉そばでいいんだよ

    @GORILLA_GORILLA_GORILLA157 likes
  • The tourist shops may well be tasty, but the small local places really are better. These days ¥1,000+ a pancake with fresh-made noodles is normal, and it's too expensive to make me want to eat it lol. The old-school places use supermarket packet noodles and they're absolutely fine! You can still get a niku-tama-soba for ¥600 or ¥700.

  • "Nagaregawa" → ✕. "Nagarekawa" → ○. And it's a shame to see okonomiyaki eaten off a plate with chopsticks.

  • I work around there, and Hassho and Koshida really are delicious. People say locals don't go, but I went all the time. Of course I love my own neighborhood place — but if you just wander around, there are little shops everywhere, so I'd also recommend ignoring the review apps and diving into one. They're seriously filling, so be careful if you're ordering other food too! One thing though: locals do not put oysters on top.

  • Hassho is genuinely good. The okonomiyaki places in the station building prioritize turnover, so the cooking is sloppy and not that tasty. Taste in okonomiyaki is personal and recommendations are hard — that's why Hassho is the safe, can't-go-wrong pick people tend to suggest to tourists.

  • Hassho is the one I'll forgive — they genuinely care about their craft. Koshida → small and pricey. Okonomimura → would basically never go. Reichan → haven't been in ages.

Where locals go instead

  • The best okonomiyaki is at the place on the edge of town run by one obachan on her own!

    街の外れにあるおばちゃんが1人でやってるとこが1番うまい!

    @LIONリオン333 likes
  • Most of these are tourist-facing shops. The places locals actually go look like the ground floor of somebody's house. I recommend Okonomi Farm in Saeki Ward!

  • It's away from the city center, but I love Kaede and Negian out in Asaminami Ward.

  • Hassho is the well-grilled crispy style, Koshida makes a smaller one you have after drinks, Sanpachi hits you with garlic — every shop grills differently, so the taste is completely different. Please try comparing them when you come to Hiroshima! My own picks are Jotaro in Inarimachi (between Nagarekawa and Hiroshima Station) and Yotchan in Kyobashi (next to the APA Hotel by the Hiroshima Ekimae Bridge)!

  • Q in Yamamoto! It's near my family home and we've been going for over 20 years. Giita [SoftBank star Yuki Yanagita] apparently kept going there through his university days too — his spikes are on display in the shop. I've lived away for 15 years now, but whenever I'm back in Hiroshima my family always goes.

FAQ

Is Hiroshima okonomiyaki worth trying?
Emphatically yes — for Hiroshima locals it's an everyday staple, not a delicacy. Even the sceptics in the comments concede the famous shops are "a solid 100 points for tourists" (88 likes); the consensus is simply that the genuinely great local shops and the tourist-facing ones are two separate worlds.
Where do Hiroshima locals actually eat okonomiyaki?
At small neighborhood joints — "the place on the edge of town run by one obachan" (333 likes) — often the ground floor of somebody's house. Shops locals named in the comments include Okonomi Farm in Saeki Ward, Kaede and Negian in Asaminami, Jotaro in Inarimachi, Yotchan in Kyobashi, and Q in Gion.
How much does okonomiyaki cost in Hiroshima?
As of the comments, locals treat roughly ¥600–700 as the right price for a niku-tama-soba (pork, egg and noodles) at a neighborhood shop, and grumble that famous-shop pancakes made with fresh noodles now top ¥1,000. Check each shop's map listing for current prices.
Is Hassho a tourist trap?
Locals are split. The thread's default is that the famous shops are for tourists, but several regulars push back: "Hassho and Koshida really are delicious — people say locals don't go, but I went all the time" (17 likes), and even a sceptic allows that "Hassho is the one I'll forgive — they genuinely care about their craft." The station-building shops draw the most criticism for rushed, turnover-first cooking.

Is Himeji's Ekisoba Worth It? "Not Amazing — It Just Puts You at Ease," Locals Say

No flattery — it's a comforting taste. I live in Kyushu and only make it to Kansai a few times a year on business, but I go every time I'm in Kobe, and I'll happily detour from Osaka for it. It's that comforting. It's not that it's spectacularly delicious or anything. It just genuinely puts you at ease.
