Ask Japanese onsen regulars about "quiet hot springs near Tokyo" and you get a very different list from the guidebooks: under a roundup of seven little-known Kanto onsen areas, commenters added more than 20 of their own by name — Sarugakyo in Gunma (90 likes), the Atsugi hills (73), an ocean-view anglerfish-hotpot inn on the Ibaraki coast (69). The most-liked personal story (118 likes) endorses featured pick Takaragawa. Two catches run through the whole thread: "near Tokyo" realistically means about two hours, and most of these places assume you have a car. At the end, the two day-trip plans regulars actually run — one without leaving Tokyo at all.

Real onsen people don't rely on roundups like this — we all keep a secret favorite inn hidden away. I head out most long weekends myself. My true favorite stays secret, but ones I can share: Nisshinkan at Manza Onsen if you want water with a punch, and Kobo-no-yu at Yumura if you want it gentle.

Oigami Onsen is a major one.

  • @takiyu-su6ki👍 6

I just moved to Tokyo, so this is a lifesaver. Honestly, the moment a place has decent transport links the crowds get insane — this level of access is exactly right.

I've been to Takaragawa Onsen. It's famous as a 'child-blessing bath.' We were going through fertility treatment at the time and struggling — we paused it and went to the onsen together for a change of pace, and we were blessed with a child. Maybe it was just the treatment stress lifting, but I'm glad we went.

Last month I went to the Minakami onsen area. A lot of inns have gone under, so the glory days are gone, but the quiet — just the sound of the Tone River — was lovely. Take the Tanigawadake Ropeway up and the view is spectacular. Tatsumikan was the regular inn of the painter Kiyoshi Yamashita, and the big bath is decorated with his artwork done in tile. It's bear country though, so take care right now 🐻

From Gunma, I'd also recommend Sarugakyo Onsen.

  • @yuikim8550👍 35

Kawarayu Onsen in Gunma. The water is excellent, and the whole area is genuinely quiet — it soothes eyes and ears worn out by the daily grind.

  • @HG-os4gq👍 73

Nanasawa Onsen in Atsugi is also still under the radar, and it might be just the thing.

  • @ryujisato7466👍 40

Tsurumaki Onsen you can reach on a single Odakyu train from Shinjuku. They even hold shogi title matches there.

  • @jjwanderer7913👍 40

Thank you for counting Yamanashi as Kanto! (We're Greater Tokyo, but administratively Chubu.) Beyond the famous Isawa Onsen there are tons of hidden springs and single-inn onsen here. Shimobe Onsen is a wonderfully faded little onsen town — recommended.

Yoro Onsen is near the strata that gave the 'Chibanian' geological age its name — worth the visit for that alone. And from Goi Station the Kominato Railway, a charmingly rustic little line, runs to Yoro-Keikoku Station, with Lake Takataki, the Ichihara Lakeside Museum and seasonal night illuminations along the way. Lovely as a rail trip.

  • @MITOGURO👍 69

In Isohara, Kita-Ibaraki, there are two inns — Futatsushima Kanko Hotel and Isohara Seaside Hotel. Every room in both looks straight onto the sea, the baths are ocean-view and wide open, and the locally-sourced breakfast gets high marks. In deep winter the anglerfish hotpot is superb, so dinner's covered too. At night I slept like a log, wrapped in the sound of the waves — and if that bothers you, they lend out earplugs.

  • @fygar_asdfjkl👍 52

Oigami Onsen has an inn run by Gyoza no Manshu, the gyoza chain.

For Oigami I'd recommend Tomeikan — the inn run by Gyoza no Manshu, the beloved budget Chinese chain from Saitama and Tokyo. The dining hall serves the same dishes as the restaurants, and day-trip bathing is OK too.

  • @kthknk9340👍 18

I was hoping for places an hour from Tokyo, but yeah — it's two hours after all.

  • @keroyonnn👍 17

Car this, car that — most of us in Tokyo don't even own a car!!

Where locals go instead

  • @hs6297👍 20

An hour and a half from central Tokyo: a light hike up Mt. Tsukuba, a soak in the Tsukuba onsen, then something good to eat on the way home. That's my go-to day-trip plan.

My recommended day-trip onsen: soak in Kamata's black-water hot spring — inside Tokyo — hit the sauna, then finish with gyoza and beer (or Shaoxing wine) after the bath ✨♨️🥟🍺✨

FAQ

Are there quiet onsen towns near Tokyo besides Hakone?
Yes — the comment section's most-endorsed picks were Sarugakyo Onsen in Gunma (90 likes), Nanasawa Onsen in the Atsugi hills of Kanagawa (73), Tsurumaki Onsen (40) and Kawarayu Onsen (35), on top of featured areas like Takaragawa and Oigami. Most are small, low-transit onsen areas about two hours out.
Do you need a car to reach these smaller onsen towns?
Usually, and Tokyo commenters grumble about exactly that — most city dwellers don't own one. Train-friendly picks named in the comments: Tsurumaki Onsen (one Odakyu train from Shinjuku), Yoro Valley via the scenic Kominato Railway in Chiba, Mt. Tsukuba, and Kamata's black-water baths inside Tokyo itself.
How far from Tokyo are these quiet onsen really?
Budget about two hours each way. One dry comment (18 likes) sums up the thread: "I was hoping for places an hour from Tokyo, but yeah — it's two hours after all." That distance is also why they stay quiet: commenters note that anywhere with good transport links gets crowded.
Anything to watch out for when visiting rural onsen areas right now?
Bears. A commenter who visited the Minakami area (29 likes) praised the riverside quiet but warned it is bear country as of the comments (late 2025), and several others hesitated for the same reason. Check local advisories before hiking between baths in mountain onsen areas.

Is the JR Pass Still Worth It? Japanese Rail Fans' Verdict on the 70% Price Hike

It was too cheap before, and honestly it's still cheap after the revision, so this is fair. With the yen this weak they could raise it even more.
