#Osaka#Umeda#Dotonbori

Ask the comment section of "so which takoyaki in Osaka is actually the best?" (703 comments) and the locals' first answer is disarmingly honest: not at any shop you can Google. "For someone born in Osaka, the best takoyaki is the run-down little place that isn't even a chain" (149 likes); "the 6-for-100-yen stand the neighborhood grandma runs" (160); and the confession that explains every disappointing listicle — "Osaka people buy from tiny local joints or make it at home, so we honestly don't know which shops to recommend tourists" (121). But pressed for names a visitor can actually walk into, the thread delivers six: Kukuru's molten classic (297), Juhachiban's tenkasu-loaded style ("cheap and great"), Wanaka as the safe pick, Ahoya's oversized gooey ones, Hanadako in Umeda — endorsed by someone who worked at a rival — and Kogaryu in Amerikamura.

For someone born in Osaka, the best takoyaki is from the run-down old place that isn't even a chain.

What locals said (excerpted from 703)

My favorite is the 6-for-100-yen takoyaki from the stand the neighborhood grandma runs.

The gooey, molten takoyaki from the neighborhood grandma's place is the best there is.

People from Osaka buy from tiny local joints or make it at home, so honestly we don't really know which shops to recommend to tourists. That's why videos like this are fun and actually useful — next time someone asks me, I'll have an answer!

  • @tout3229👍 2

Osaka native here — I've literally never eaten takoyaki anywhere except the grubby place near home and my own kitchen…

  • @yuki9207-q1f👍 6

The safe answer is Wanaka. But rather than a chain in the busy district, hitting a few takoyaki joints in Osaka's shitamachi neighborhoods and comparing beats it on both cost and taste.

  • @Rate_SilverWolf👍 47

Conclusion → Osaka takoyaki is just delicious, full stop!

Where locals go instead

My first takoyaki in Osaka was Kukuru and it was incredible — molten outside and in, drenched in plenty of sauce. The best.

  • @game9876👍 151

Juhachiban is the unorthodox one — batter loaded with crunchy tenkasu — but it's cheap and I really like it.

  • @Take-00👍 12

Juhachiban is also great with salt instead of sauce!!

  • @kansuke145👍 55

Wanaka really is good. Whenever I'm in Osaka I make sure to eat it before heading home.

Ahoya is my aaaaabsolute favorite — each ball is huge, the molten kind, with big chunks of octopus. The best.

  • @Sec_vermouth👍 5

Real talk: Hanadako in the underground arcade by Hankyu Umeda is excellent. If you're a green-onion person you genuinely need to go — there's always a queue, though.

I used to work at Kukuru — and personally, Hanadako is tastier.

Isn't Kogaryu on this same strip? The Amerikamura shop in Shinsaibashi is the famous one — Kogaryu is genuinely good, recommended!

Places named in this article

Sennichimae / Namba

The thread's consensus safe pick — "I always eat Wanaka before leaving Osaka" (55 likes) — with the honest caveat that neighborhood joints beat any big-name chain on value.

The value pick: batter loaded with crunchy tenkasu, "a bit unorthodox but cheap and really good" (151 likes) — and regulars say try it with salt instead of sauce. The old Dotonbori stall now runs under the SONS-DOHTONBORI name (as of writing); the original main shop is in Nishinakajima.

Dotonbori

The molten-classic pick: "crispy outside, molten inside, drenched in sauce — the best" (297 likes).

  • AhoyaあほやLocal chain, multiple Osaka locations (e.g. Taniku, near Tanimachi 9-chome)

The local-chain dark horse: "each ball is huge, molten, with big pieces of octopus" — named by two commenters nobody prompted.

Shin-Umeda Shokudogai, under the tracks by JR Osaka Station

The insider's pick: "I used to work at Kukuru — personally, Hanadako is better" plus a negi-lover's endorsement of its green-onion-buried negi-mayo. Expect a queue (as of the comments). Note: it's in the Shin-Umeda Shokudogai alley, not the Hankyu underground mall the comment recalls.

Amerikamura, Shinsaibashi

The Amerikamura institution a commenter adds to the list — "famous, and genuinely good."

FAQ

What's the best takoyaki in Osaka according to locals?
Their honest first answer: the tiny neighborhood stand near home — "the run-down little place that isn't even a chain" (149 likes), "the grandma's 6-for-100-yen takoyaki" (160) — or homemade. One local admits Osaka people barely know which shops to send tourists to (121). The famous stands are for visitors; that doesn't make them bad.
Which takoyaki shops can a visitor actually try?
The six the thread names: Kukuru (molten classic, 297 likes), Juhachiban (tenkasu-loaded and cheap — try it with salt), Wanaka (the safe pick), Ahoya (oversized and gooey), Hanadako by Osaka Station (endorsed by an ex-Kukuru staffer), and Kogaryu in Amerikamura. All are walkable from the Namba–Umeda tourist spine.
Is famous-chain takoyaki in Osaka worth it?
Locals say it's good but not the peak: "rather than a chain in the busy district, hitting a few takoyaki joints in Osaka's shitamachi neighborhoods beats it on both taste and cost" (per one commenter). If you have one meal, the named shops above are reliable; if you have an afternoon, wander a residential shopping street instead.
