Is Sushiro Still Worth It? Japanese Diners Say the Pieces Shrank, the Prices Rose, and They Moved to Hama-Sushi
By Rakutaro · Tokyo, Japan

The most-liked comment in a 1,814-comment Japanese thread about Sushiro is not really about Sushiro at all: conveyor-belt sushi as a whole has slipped below the line where you shrug and say "well, it's cheap" (1,123 likes). Read the top 200 and the complaint is physical before it is culinary, the pieces got smaller (751 likes) while the prices went up (238 likes), and the chain these diners keep naming as the place they moved to is Hama-Sushi, which they say is both cheaper (246 likes) and better than it used to be (717 likes). The defence is in there too, from a Sushiro employee saying the store is slammed (191 likes) to diners who still pay the premium.
“Conveyor-belt sushi has gone downhill lately, and not just Sushiro. It has dropped below the line where you think "well, it's cheap, so never mind".”
Where Japanese people go instead
Honestly, part of it is simply that Hama-Sushi got better. It's less "I don't want to go to Sushiro" and more "I want to go to Hama-Sushi".

- Sushiro
Still the biggest chain and still busy: an employee says the store is slammed (191 likes) and a diner who went the week before says it was packed (22 likes). Plates start at 120 yen in the suburbs and 150 yen in city-centre branches, and only ordered items travel the lane.

FAQ
- Is Sushiro still cheap?
- Less than the guidebooks suggest. Sushiro's cheapest plate is priced by store type, 120 yen at suburban branches, 130 yen at semi-urban and 150 yen at city-centre ones, so the same plate costs more in central Tokyo or Osaka than in the suburbs. A revision on 22 July 2026 moved its select lean tuna from 120 to 150 yen. Hama-Sushi, the chain most of these diners moved to, still starts at 110 yen, with tuna at 132 yen since 26 May 2026.

- Does the sushi still go around on the belt at Sushiro?
- Mostly no, and Japanese diners notice. Since February 2023 Sushiro only sends items you have ordered down the lane, and in November 2023 the group's president said the old free-flowing service would not come back. One commenter puts it bluntly: it isn't conveyor-belt sushi any more, it's just a sushi place where you order (53 likes). If you want the belt experience, order from the tablet and watch for your own plates.

- Why do some Japanese diners refuse to go to Sushiro?
- Two incidents come up again and again. In June 2022 the Consumer Affairs Agency ordered Sushiro's operator to take action over bait advertising, running campaigns for sea urchin and crab dishes it could not actually serve. Then in January 2023 a customer filmed himself licking a soy sauce bottle; the company sued for about 67 million yen and withdrew the claim in August 2023 after a settlement. The single angriest comment of the lot is about that decision (862 likes).

- Which conveyor-belt sushi chain do Japanese diners recommend instead?
- Hama-Sushi, by a wide margin. The most-liked answer says it isn't dislike of Sushiro so much as wanting to go to Hama-Sushi (717 likes), and the reasons given are price (246 likes) and cheap tuna (178 likes). Uobei gets a smaller but firm vote as the best value of all (20 likes). A fair number of people say all the chains taste the same now and they pick whichever has the better limited-time menu that month (115 likes).
Yoshinoya vs Sukiya vs Matsuya: How Japanese Diners Actually Pick a Beef Bowl Chain (and Who Won Their Blind Taste Test)
“Yoshinoya for the beef bowl. Sukiya for toppings. Matsuya for set meals. Nakau for oyakodon. The reason the taste varies from branch to branch is whether the individual staff can follow the manual properly. Sukiya can't beat Yoshinoya on the taste of the beef bowl itself, so it specialises in toppings. Matsuya is the set meal specialist. Incidentally, Sukiya is by far the best at making ads. Also, Noritama rice seasoning goes surprisingly well on a Yoshinoya beef bowl (your mileage may vary lol)”

What Japanese people said — picked from the top 200 of 1,814 comments
The pieces are smaller than they used to be, aren't they.
The taste has dropped off compared to before. Hama-Sushi, on the other hand, has got better.
First and foremost, the fish and the rice both got smaller and they still put the price up, which I just can't take any more. The effort to make you eat more plates isn't going into flavour or quality, it's purely physical, and that is mean-spirited.
It used to be cheap, but the prices keep climbing and I can't really go any more. These days I go to a different conveyor-belt place.
The old Sushiro had yellowtail that was fresh, with a snap to it. Lately it's limp, so I don't go any more.
The drop in quality is real. And they used to send each piece down the belt as soon as it was made, but now for some reason they wait until several are ready, so it turns up less fresh. It drives me mad. This isn't conveyor-belt sushi any more, it's just a sushi place where you order.
Waiting for it to come round is too much of a drag, and every so often some dodgy customer takes it. That stress.
I don't trust a company that won't take a firm line with the idiots posting stunts online.
Having the soy sauce bottle licked was rotten luck, but in the end they gave the idiot no punishment at all, and that let me down. That alone is why I stopped going.
The biggest own goal was withdrawing the lawsuit against the boy who licked the bottle and settling. Because of that it turned into "so they forgive you in the end", and the same crimes are still going on.
I ordered sea urchin at Hama-Sushi and it smelled like a ditch, bad enough to make me feel sick. The pieces are small too. Quality has dropped everywhere lately.
Sushiro, Hama-Sushi and Kura are all much of a muchness to me, none of them stands out. I pick where to go each time based on which limited-time items look good.
I'm not that keen on Hama-Sushi, Kura or Kappa, so Sushiro is the one that tastes good to me and I go even if it costs a bit more. When I want to splash out, Choshimaru.
I work at Sushiro and we are unbelievably busy lol
