• I stayed at Kobe Sauna & Spa and slept better than I expected, so I've come to quite like capsules. The late checkout meant I could sleep in and take a morning bath too — it really cleared the fatigue.

• As someone who likes to eat and drink various things in the room, a capsule is too small for me. (Dormy Inn is a cut or two above other business hotels for service, but for the price the rooms are cramped.)

• When I was young I was fine with capsule hotels, net cafés, even sleeping in the car — but once you're older and develop something like sleep apnea and start using a CPAP, anything below a business hotel is off the table.

• The capsule in Beppu had free-flowing hot-spring water and a sauna for ¥2,500 — great value. Personally I like super-sento-type baths with a capsule attached; late night and early morning the baths and sauna are empty, so I stay for the onsen. On trips I do one night at a cheap place like a capsule and one night at a slightly nicer hotel.

  別府のカプセルは、源泉かけ流しの温泉とサウナがあって2500円でコスパ良かったです。個人的にはスパ銭タイプの温泉に、カプセルが併設されているところが好きです。深夜や早朝は温泉やサウナが空いているので、温泉目当てで泊まります。旅行だと、1泊はカプセルなどの安宿、1泊はちょっと良いホテルみたいな使い方をします。2泊をそこそこのビジホ…でも良いんですけど、滞在時間が短いときは安宿で充分です。ちょっと良いホテルは、ホテルの滞在自体を楽しみます。
