"This Is What a Tourist Town Should Feel Like": Is Dogo Onsen Worth It, According to Japanese Locals

The most-liked comment on a Japanese food crawl through Dogo Onsen — 2,663 likes — is not about food at all: "It just feels like a tourist town done right. I've seen so many oversaturated tourist spots lately that I'm honestly happy a place like this exists." The reply under it (251 likes) names the places it is aiming at: Omicho, Atami, Yokohama Chinatown. More than 40 commenters introduce themselves as Ehime residents, and the case they build is about price rather than food — a tourist strip that never learned to gouge. There are reservations too: the mikan juice really is expensive, Shikoku is a long way from anywhere, and there is one bath locals quietly switch to when the Honkan is full.

It just feels like a tourist town done right. I've seen so many oversaturated tourist spots lately that I got weirdly happy a place like this exists 😂

  • Oi — is this a dig at Omicho, Atami, Yokohama Chinatown and the rest of the tourist spots out east? 😡 You're not wrong.

  • I can't think of a single place to eat around Dogo Onsen that has let me down. Sights in Shikoku are a long way apart, so the travelling wears you out — knowing the food and drink won't miss is a real relief.

  • Ehime is unreal — even the places locals rate as so-so are just plain good. Please go out to Uchiko as well.

  • Ehime resident here. It genuinely used to be a dowdy old arcade selling nothing but souvenirs, but it has been smartened up for inbound visitors and younger people. Really happy it reviewed well.

  • Amazing — it scores well even though it's a tourist area, and the prices aren't stupidly inflated. It's gentle on you. I might go.

  • Reasonable across the board despite being a tourist area ❤ And it tastes good on top of that 😄

  • Kashi-shi No. 28 is on supermarket shelves here under the name Aika No. 28. It's what gets sold as "Beni Madonna". It really is good, isn't it.

  • Kashi-shi No. 28 (Beni Madonna) — the fruit itself is seriously expensive. And seriously delicious, so the price makes sense.

  • I braced myself for how hard it was going to get trashed the second it came on, but it got praised across the board, so glad!! Can't be helped, but the prices are tourist prices throughout. "That mikan juice is steep!" came out of my mouth, lol

  • When I stayed in Matsuyama, 10 FACTORY really was that good, so I'm glad it made the video 😊 One warning: Ichiroku tart is an Ehime specialty, but you can buy it outside Ehime too ⚠️

  • I live in Dogo — for botchan dango go to Utsuboya, and for tart go to Rokujiya.

  • Terakoya Honpo is a chain — they have branches in tourist areas all over the country, not just Dogo Onsen.

  • The baby castella near Dogo Onsen is seriously bad, watch out everyone!!!

  • Dogo Onsen has only just come out of its restoration work, so it's spotless right now. There are other sights nearby and a big shopping arcade, and the trams make getting around easy.

  • I went to Dogo Onsen once. It isn't flashy, but there were a lot of fairly priced shops and I had a good time 😊 And the water quality is the best.

  • I'm from Ehime, and since the prefecture is deep countryside and Shikoku's transport is weak, getting here costs a fair bit — so it's hard for me to tell you to come. That said, there are few people, so it's calm, and you get healed by food you can only eat here. If you have time and money to spare, it might be worth it. Speaking of good food, my strong recommendation is Kiri no Mori daifuku.

Where locals go instead

  • So you were in my home town~ It might not have much glamour, but there isn't that much inbound traffic, so my impression is there isn't much ripping people off either. The one thing is that Dogo Onsen Honkan really is packed, so everyone goes to Kisuke no Yu instead.

    地元来てたんですね~ そんなに華はないかもしれないですけど、インバウンドもそんなにないのでぼったくりもあんまりないイメージ ただ、道後温泉本館はほんとに人多いので喜助の湯にみんな行くくらいですかね…

    @lordsmobilehack256614 likes
  • The visitors behave well, locals can enjoy it too, and there are little-known foot baths around, so please come!! — from a local. Near here I'd recommend a place called Kiri no Mori Daifuku!

  • It wasn't in the video, but the parfait at Shirasagi Coffee, right by the station exit, was unbelievably good — eat it if you go!! 🥹 I was moved that a parfait this good exists ✨

FAQ

Is Dogo Onsen a tourist trap?
The Japanese comment section says the opposite, and says it about price. The top comment (2,663 likes) calls it "a tourist town done right" next to saturated spots like Atami and Yokohama Chinatown, and a 217-like comment says nothing they ate around Dogo has ever let them down. The dissent is mild: prices are still tourist prices, and one person found the mikan juice steep.
Is Dogo Onsen Honkan crowded, and is there another bath?
Locals say yes, it is packed — the wooden Honkan reopened fully in July 2024 after a five-and-a-half-year restoration, and a commenter notes it is spotless now. The instead they name is Kisuke no Yu, a big hot-spring and sauna complex beside Matsuyama Station that locals use as the everyday bath. There are also small free foot baths around Dogo.
What is the "Kashi-shi No. 28" mikan juice everyone talks about?
It is a mandarin variety, and the top explanation in the comments (871 likes) is that locals buy it in supermarkets as Aika No. 28 — the fruit sold nationally under the brand name Beni Madonna. Another commenter (61 likes) says the fruit itself is expensive, so the juice price is fair rather than a tourist markup.
What do locals say to buy, and what to skip?
A Dogo resident recommends Utsuboya for botchan dango and Rokujiya for tart. Two warnings from the comments, as of when they were written: Ichiroku tart is sold outside Ehime too, so it is a weak souvenir, and Terakoya Honpo is a nationwide chain found in tourist areas across Japan rather than a Dogo shop.
