Under a 976,000-view walk through Hakone's street food (125 comments), Japanese commenters confirm the classics and then quietly out-recommend the video: Owakudani's famous black eggs come with lore — "one egg adds seven years to your life" (349 likes) — but also real-world gripes about multi-egg packs you can't split, and Chimoto's yumochi mochi draws the thread's purest praise at 102 likes. The best intel is in the additions: two separate commenters override manju shop Nanohana's famous steamed buns in favor of its yaki-mont-blanc pastry, others add a footbath mont-blanc soft-serve, a just-opened charcoal hamburger stand, and a rival manju shop for those who find yumochi too sweet.

I heard that eating one of the hot-spring eggs adds seven years to your life, so I split mine with the grandma and grandpa who came along with me ☺️

Seriously though, I wish they'd sell the eggs individually. There were two of us, they only came in packs of five, and we ended up giving up on them.

The black eggs not coming in singles is rough, lol. My friend managed two and I did three. They really fill you up.

Went to Owakudani today and the black eggs were in packs of four. They've shrunk the pack…!

  • @kyancan1025👍 102

Yumochi is so good I could eat it every day.

  • @ko1rou👍 3

Chimoto's mitarashi dango is ridiculously good!

The yumochi shop is a little way off from the station, right? When I went years ago, it was nicely clear of the most crowded stretch.

Coming here right after seeing Tokyo, the prices look downright kind. Honestly, for a tourist area this is pretty generous pricing.

The abalone was seriously delicious. I gave up on day one because of the queue, but there was no line on day two — it was moving enough that I want to eat it again.

Nanohana's manju really are all delicious — please try them.

  • @yooomooo4304👍 22

I recommend the coffee soft-serve at the coffee shop in Hakone-Yumoto. And at Nanohana, I push the yaki-mont-blanc way harder than the manju.

    The yaki-mont-blanc is stupidly good…! 🌰

Across the street from Chimoto there's a mont-blanc soft-serve I recommend! There's a footbath there too, so you can soak while you eat 😊

Oyakata Hamburg, which apparently opened recently, was jaw-droppingly good.

Chimoto's yumochi is too sweet for me. Marushima Honten's onsen manju is soft and delicious 😋

Places named in this article

Owakudani

The icon, with folklore attached — one egg is said to add seven years to your life. Sold only in multi-egg packs (commenters grumble they can't buy singles; one 2026 visitor reports packs shrank from five eggs to four), and availability depends on Owakudani access, which closes for volcanic activity and maintenance — check before you ride up (as of the comments).

  • ChimotoちもとHakone-Yumoto

The wagashi shop behind yumochi, the thread's most-loved item ("I could eat it every day," 102 likes) — a fan also pushes the mitarashi dango. Slightly off the busiest stretch, which one commenter says keeps it calmer.

Famous for onsen manju, but the comments' real verdict is the yaki-mont-blanc — a crisp-shelled chestnut pastry two separate commenters push over the buns. The manju storefront across from Chimoto also squeezes a mont-blanc soft-serve to order, with a small footbath out front (as of the comments).

Hakone-Yumoto, by the station

The dissenter's pick: for one commenter who finds Chimoto's yumochi too sweet, this old-line shop's soft onsen manju is the better bun.

Hakone-Yumoto, near the station

A commenter's new-shop alert: charcoal-grilled hamburger skewers from a stand run by a former sumo oyakata — "jaw-droppingly good" (as of the comments).

Hakone-Yumoto, station street

The "coffee shop soft-serve" a 22-like commenter recommends — the roastery on the station street known for its coffee-milk soft-serve.

FAQ

What should I eat in Hakone?
Per this comment section: Owakudani's black eggs for the experience, yumochi at Chimoto (the thread's top-liked food at 102 likes), and then the commenters' own additions — Nanohana's yaki-mont-blanc pastry, the footbath mont-blanc soft-serve across from Chimoto, and the charcoal hamburger skewers at Oyakata Hamburg near Hakone-Yumoto Station.
Are the Owakudani black eggs worth it?
Commenters treat them as a must-do ritual — one black egg is said to add seven years to your life (349 likes) — but manage expectations: they're plain boiled eggs with black shells, sold only in multi-egg packs (five, or four per a recent commenter), and Owakudani access sometimes closes for volcanic activity, so check before going up (as of the comments).
What is yumochi?
Hakone-Yumoto's signature sweet from the wagashi shop Chimoto: a marshmallow-soft mochi made with egg white, studded with cubes of yokan (sweet bean jelly). It drew the thread's purest praise — "so good I could eat it every day" (102 likes) — though one dissenter finds it too sweet and points to Marushima Honten's onsen manju instead.
Is Hakone street food expensive?
Commenters found it reasonable by tourist-town standards — "coming here right after Tokyo, the prices look downright kind" (13 likes). Prices in the video are as of late 2022, so treat exact figures as dated and check current menus on the shops' map listings.

Is Hakone Worth It Right Now? Japanese Travelers on the Inbound Crowds — and the Quiet Routes That Still Work

I used to drive route buses in Hakone. Between the inbound tourists, dealing with visitors, delays from road congestion and never getting a day off, I pushed myself until it broke me mentally — the psychiatrist ordered me to stop working. I only came back on the condition that I'd never drive Hakone routes again.
