Is Kakida, Tokyo's Famous Luxury All-You-Can-Eat Sushi, Worth It? Locals Say You're Paying for the Party, Not the Fish

#Tokyo#Shinjuku

Japan's bluntest food reviewer called the sushi at Kakida — Tokyo's famous reservation-only luxury all-you-can-eat sushi restaurant — flat-out not good, and the comment section's top reply (30,739 likes) couldn't get past the black-and-white "heritage" photos at a shop founded in 2022. But the 2,500-comment consensus is more precise than a pile-on: the staff's warmth and the party energy are real ("honestly, I kind of want to go now" drew 3,754 likes), while the mechanics — starting you on pre-made sides, all-at-once refill rounds — read as designed to fill you up. The thesis comment locals rallied behind explains where to put your money instead.

Opened in 2022 and already using black-and-white photos — that's some audacity. Sushi talent aside, they've got the social media game and the service down… "luxury sushi atmosphere, all you can eat" is an interesting concept, I'll give them that.

"For! Re-al!" — you brace for "it was delicious!" and instead get the reliable, trusted "it was NOT good!" I love this guy. (Warning: the comment section is a zoo.)

The black-and-white photos broke me 😂

Founded in 2022 and going black-and-white is too funny.

  • @Officials_kisidasyoutarou👍 658

    Instant time-honored-establishment aesthetic, lol.

  • @potepppp👍 15,951

The chef beaming and striking a pose with his tuna, with no idea he's about to be torn apart — I feel for the guy.

  • @31224234👍 6,589

That said, staff who smile for the camera like that? I don't dislike it at all — honestly, it wins me over!

  • @sukemaru5587👍 1,248

Billing yourself as all-you-can-eat and then starting everyone on pre-made side dishes — that's so calculated it's funny.

The all-at-once refill system means you're kept waiting and drip-fed until you're full. With a buffet you can actually eat your fill; the synchronized-refill format is nothing but a loss.

Ever since I saw a video of the owner laughing that he's "never rolled a maki," I haven't trusted this place one bit. And sure enough, this is the business he's running… 😮‍💨💢

At ¥1,400 I'd go. But paying ¥14,000 for bad sushi? No thanks — even if it's going all-in on entertainment.

  • @ABCD-x4u8n👍 3,754

Honestly it just looks fun — I kind of want to go now. I don't hate this hyped-up energy.

Same. Felt like I could pay for the entertainment value of the place rather than the quality of the sushi, lol.

  • @matsunoki369👍 156

If the food were actually good with this concept, the place would be a monster hit.

Luxury and all-you-can-eat just don't mix. People who choose luxury will pay whatever it takes for genuinely great food — they're not there for photo ops or performances. Taste is absolute.

FAQ

Is Kakida (Yurakucho Kakida) worth it?
The comment consensus is split cleanly in two: the hospitality and the festive, all-you-can-eat energy are genuinely likable — several commenters admitted the place looks fun — but the sushi itself was panned, and at roughly ¥14,000 that's the dealbreaker for most. As one put it: at ¥1,400 sure, at ¥14,000 no.
Where is Yurakucho Kakida?
Despite the name, the restaurant operates in Shinjuku — inside the Odakyu Hotel Century Southern Tower by Shinjuku Station's south exit — after its original Yurakucho building closed for redevelopment. It's fully reservation-based, so book ahead and check the current location when you do.
Is all-you-can-eat sushi in Tokyo a good deal?
The most-agreed-with comment in this thread (8,773 likes) argues luxury and all-you-can-eat fundamentally don't mix: people paying premium prices want the best fish, not performances. Commenters also warn about the mechanics of this format — pre-made sides served first and synchronized refill rounds that slow you down — so read the format, not just the price.
