Where Sapporo Locals Actually Eat Seafood: "We Only Ever Go to Kaiten Sushi"

Ask Sapporo where to actually eat seafood and the comment section answers 53 times over: kaiten (conveyor-belt) sushi — the local big three of Toriton, Nagoyaka-tei and Nemuro Hanamaru are named in 37 separate top comments under a Japanese market-crawl video, not the roughly 4,000-yen bowls at the tourist market. It started when a crab seller at the Jogai Market itself told the filmer as much, and the top comment (567 likes) salutes his honesty. A born-and-raised Sapporo local (77 likes) has never once paid 4,000 yen for kaisendon, and an ex-fishmonger (43 likes) flat out won't eat there. The comments go on to settle which branch to hit, what a blowout costs, and the one 500-yen bowl still worth the market trip.
“The staffer is dead right. Most people in Sapporo eat their kaisendon at a kaiten sushi place or at their own regular spot.”

What locals said (excerpted from 790)
The young guy at the crab shop is a total pro at customer service. No favoritism — he talks to you straight, actually shows you the crab, lets you touch it, and shares everything he knows. A real pro.
— @山田秀志-c1g567 likesThank you for coming to Hokkaido! I was born and raised in Sapporo, and I've never once had a 4,000-yen kaisendon! lol. With 3,000 yen you can eat pretty luxuriously at a kaiten sushi place 🍣✨ I've been looking forward to this series — I'd been waiting for the Sapporo episode! Please come again 😆
— @user-qe1nt9zl4i77 likesI used to work at a fish shop in Sapporo, and I would never eat, drink or buy anything at the Jogai Market lol. For sushi, like the first guy said, you're absolutely better off at a Hokkaido-grown kaiten sushi chain. Nagoyaka-tei, Toriton, places like that.
— @増田健-w4y43 likesAlways enjoy the videos ^_^ I'm from Hokkaido, so I'd been thinking 'finally, Hokkaido!' What the crab shop guy said is spot on! Locals basically never go there! It's aimed at tourists, so it's badly overpriced (⌒-⌒; )
20 likesIt's not 'kind of expensive' — tourist-area prices in Hokkaido are Ginza-level. The ingredients are great, but a lot of shops are coasting on them, so if you've built up a fantasy about Hokkaido, take one deep breath before you choose a restaurant.
— @ガチャピンムック-r6j40 likesYeah, people really do say Hokkaido's kaiten sushi is insane. The kaisendon I had at Nijo Market was close to 3,000 yen too. When I asked an acquaintance in Sapporo, they said Nijo is for tourists and the Central Market side is better.

Where locals go instead
Toriton is genuinely good — the cuts of fish are big. It's a chain, but it's delicious and cheap, so everyone, if you come here as a tourist, please do give it a try.
— @おしょう-f2r63 likesI'm a local and I honestly only ever go to kaiten sushi 😅 The value is ridiculous, so please try Toriton 😊 Fair warning: it's crowded even on weekday lunchtimes!
25 likesI haven't tried Nagoyaka-tei, but I've been to Toriton and Nemuro Hanamaru! So good that I ate my fill and it came to about 3,500 yen — and honestly I think it's worth every yen of that.
— @psg479314 likesHonestly, the 'Hanamaru' at Sapporo Station (the cheap one) is the best value for money, and it's delicious lol. Eat until you're completely full and you'll still come out under the price of one kaisendon 😂
— @Davkaede7 likesSapporo local here. Everything the crab shop guy said is correct. Of the restaurants that showed up in the video, I'd recommend the ramen shop 'Araton' and the curry place 'Kuroshio.'
29 likesAt that market, Donbei was good. Limited servings — around 500 yen, if I remember right. They had something like a bara-chirashi bowl too. Love your channel — please come to Sapporo again!
— @こゆ-i7u10 likesThe level of Sapporo's kaiten sushi is insane, in the best way lol. Nemuro Hanamaru at Sapporo Station had a two-hour wait at 2pm on a weekday, so rather than waste the wait I took the subway 10 minutes to Toriton. There's really no need to go out of your way to the market at all.

FAQ
- Do Sapporo locals eat at the Jogai Market?
- Mostly no — a crab seller at the market told the filmer as much, and locals back him up: an ex-fishmonger (43 likes) says they would never eat or buy anything there, and a Hokkaido local (20 likes) calls it tourist-targeted and overpriced. The stalls themselves still earn praise for honest service (567 likes).

- At Hokkaido-grown kaiten (conveyor-belt) sushi chains — Toriton, Nagoyaka-tei and Nemuro Hanamaru, named in 37 separate top comments. Around 3,000–3,500 yen buys a blowout meal locals rate above the market's roughly 4,000-yen bowls. Expect queues even on weekday lunchtimes, as of the comments.
- Is kaiten sushi in Hokkaido really that good?
- Locals treat it as settled: Toriton gets 'big cuts, genuinely good, and cheap' (63 likes), and even a stuff-yourself 3,500-yen run is called worth every yen (14 likes). The catch is the lines — one commenter hit a two-hour wait at 2pm on a weekday at the Sapporo Station branch, as of the comments.
- How expensive is seafood in Sapporo?
- At tourist spots, genuinely expensive — a 40-like warning says sightseeing-area prices in Hokkaido are 'Ginza-level' while some shops coast on the region's reputation. Locals consider about 3,000 yen at kaiten sushi a splurge (77 likes), and the market's famous cheap option is a limited-run bara-chirashi around 500 yen.

Show Hokkaido locals a "top-10 secret onsen" countdown and they out-obscure it: across 185 comments, locals named more than 40 hot springs of their own — while the most-liked replies (22–25 likes) fact-check the list itself, insisting picks like Karurusu and Shiobetsu Tsurutsuru have been famous locally for 40 years. The genuinely obscure winner survives scrutiny: Shukubai, a wood-fired bathhouse near New Chitose Airport that first-timers say feels "like borrowing a stranger's bath." Locals also flag two celebrated hidden springs as closed with no reopening in sight — and a couple of them quietly name where they soak instead of inbound-packed Noboribetsu.

Onsen, According to Japanese Onsen People: Where They Soak, How They Book, and What They Skip
Most onsen guides are written by visitors who went once. This one is aggregated from the people who go monthly: Japanese comment sections where regulars name the baths they actually use, correct the listicles, flag what's closed, and hand over their booking tricks — every number below is a real like-count from a translated Japanese comment.
2,166 likesFood & RestaurantsYouTubeWhere Fukuoka Locals Actually Eat Ramen — and Why Ichiran Never Comes Up
Ask Fukuoka locals to name their ramen shop and the comment section turns into a ballot box: 1,852 comments of shop names, where the second most-liked reply (1,705 likes) is about the shop nobody named — Ichiran, the tonkotsu chain tourists queue for. Locals insist it tastes fine; it's just too expensive for something they eat every week, and tourist-famous ShinShin goes unmentioned too. The most-liked comment of all (2,166 likes) is "the Umakatchan my mom made" — instant ramen, because in Fukuoka tonkotsu is daily food, not a destination. Almost every local named a different shop, and one first-time visitor ended up eating eight bowls trying to settle it. Below, the shops they actually vouched for — starting with a sub-¥300 bowl.

438 likesFood & RestaurantsYouTubeIs Hiroshima Okonomiyaki Worth It? Locals Say Skip the Famous Shops — "The Tiny Neighborhood Joints Are Several Times Better, and Cheaper"
Under a viral rundown of Hiroshima's four most famous okonomiyaki shops, the top local comment (438 likes) says the obviously tourist-oriented picks lose to the tiny neighborhood joints, which are "several times tastier — and cheaper." "These are all shops locals don't go to" (205 likes) sums up the pushback, but the tone is affectionate, not angry: every Hiroshima native keeps a personal favorite shop (331 likes), the really good ones stay secret so they don't get crowded (157 likes), and okonomiyaki is supposed to be an everyday ¥700 niku-tama-soba, not something you queue for. A few regulars push back — famous Hassho and Koshida really are that good, they say — and locals name a dozen real shops they'd send you to instead.
