Where Tokyo Locals Actually Drink: Kamata, the Izakaya Town Ten Minutes from Haneda
By Rakutaro · Tokyo, Japan

Kamata barely registers with tourists — but under a 10-shop guide to its izakaya, Tokyo drinkers with 50, 60, even 70 years in the neighborhood signed off on the list ("been here 50 years; every one of these is a safe bet, even for first-timers") and then named 13 more shops of their own, from a white-liver yakitori joint by the east exit to a Hokkaido-only sake bar in the west arcade. The consensus No. 1 is Toriman, the giant cheap-and-cheerful institution locals have drunk at for half a century. One commenter put it simply: "I've drunk in countries all over the world. KAMATA is the strongest." And it's one train stop from Haneda.
“I've been in Kamata 50 years, and I'm impressed by how good these picks are. Every one is a place you can drink at with total confidence — first-timers will enjoy them too.”

- Shinanoji (Kamata)Kamata (east exit)
The legendary morning-to-night diner-izakaya; its Heiwajima sibling closed, but locals confirm the Kamata one is alive and well. As of the comments.

A local's added pick: the white liver is exceptional per the comment, plus every variety of Kirishima shochu for comparison flights.

FAQ
- Where do Tokyo locals actually go drinking?
- This thread's answer is Kamata, in southern Tokyo near Haneda Airport. Residents of 50–70 years confirmed all ten picks in the video as places locals genuinely drink — not tourist rows — and added 13 more of their own, which is the tell: a real drinking town always has more shops than any list.
- What is the best izakaya in Kamata?
- The comments converge on Toriman, a huge, cheap, multi-floor institution — a 50-year resident says it has "taken care of me" since he was old enough to drink, and a self-described Kamata local who has tried 80% of the list still ranks it No. 1. One warning, as of the comments: floors can run on a single staffer, so your first drink may take 15 minutes.
- Is Kamata worth visiting for travelers?
- If you're flying in or out of Haneda, locals make a strong case: it's about ten minutes away by train, famous for winged gyoza and tonkatsu, strong at chicken izakaya, open very late — and one commenter who has "drunk in countries all over the world" calls KAMATA the strongest. It's an everyday Tokyo drinking town, not a polished tourist strip.

Nearly 70 years living around Kamata. I've been to most of these, but there were shops even I didn't know — you've really done the rounds. I'll go try them… come to think of it, it's been a while since Toriman 😅
60 years in Kamata. Nice choices. Don't stop at 10 — give us 30. Though yeah, No. 1 was always going to be that place 😅
Lived in Kamata over half a century. Ever since I was old enough to drink, Toriman has taken care of me.
Kamata local here. I've been to about 80% of these — and yes, No. 1 is Toriman 😊 My own tip is Shigeya by the east exit: the signature white liver is exceptional. And they stock every variety of Kirishima shochu, so you can do comparison flights. Go next time! 😊
I've drunk in countries all over the world. KAMATA is the strongest.
Kamata is famous for tonkatsu, but its bars do chicken especially well — Ueyama is popular for a reason.
Thank you for featuring my neighborhood 🙇 At Liver Land, the deep-fried liver is superb 😊
In Kamata I love Itoya by the west exit. You have to try the macaroni salad, the pepper dumplings, and the liver sashimi-style.
Across from the Machioka sweets shop in the west-exit arcade there's Totogura Nemuro — Hokkaido cooking and Hokkaido-only sake, an unusual concept done with real quality on both counts. Drop the "long-established" filter and there are still more good shops.
Taro no Daidokoro, Toritake, and the whale restaurant Takahashi are favorites of mine too.
As a local, it hurts a little that Tocchan didn't make the list…
Toriman is cheap, but sometimes there's only one staffer per floor — your first drink can take 15 minutes to arrive, so be warned.
The Shinanoji in Heiwajima closed, but Kamata's is alive and well! Kamata has standing bars and izakaya everywhere, plus Chinese and Vietnamese places — all kinds of food.
