Nikko Street Food, Judged by Japanese Visitors: "The Fried Yuba Manju Is To-Die-For Good" — and 25+ Shops They'd Add
By Rakutaro · Tokyo, Japan

The top comment on a Japanese street-food review of Nikko — 2,006 likes — calls the fried yuba manju "to-die-for good", and the comment section turns into a hometown food map: Nikko-born and Tochigi commenters name-drop 25+ shops and dishes of their own. A 472-like reply is scandalized the reviewer skipped Yuzawaya, whose sake manju it crowns "the best in Japan", commenters stage a four-way mizu-yokan rivalry, and a 193-like correction outs Cheese Garden — the polished cheesecake stop — as "actually from Nasu", with Tokyo branches to boot. There's even a 562-like public-service warning about cedar-pollen season at Toshogu. And a few commenters quietly point to the picks they'd rather keep to themselves — a yuba rice ball and a crepe stand by the station.
“The fried yuba manju is seriously to-die-for good.”

Where Japanese visitors go instead
Fudaraku's yuba-musubi is my personal favorite. It sells out sometimes, but they also stock it at the roadside station in Imaichi and the souvenir shops at Utsunomiya Station. Seasoned sticky rice wrapped in yuba — a gentle, comforting flavor.
10 likesI honestly don't want them getting popular, but Fudaraku Honpo's yuba-musubi and the dango-and-matcha set at Miyamae Dango are so good! They're on the same street as this video — next time, please!
— @めろ-o7z4 likesFudaraku Honpo's yuba-musubi, and Tentomushi near the station — a build-your-own crepe place that's cheap and delicious. Enjoy Nikko! ☺️

FAQ
- What food is Nikko famous for?
- Yuba — tofu skin — in every form. The fried yuba manju drew the thread's top comment with 2,006 likes, and commenters also push yuba-musubi (seasoned rice wrapped in yuba), Yuzawaya's sake manju — "the best in Japan" per a 472-like comment — and mizu-yokan from a handful of rival old shops.
- Is Nikko street food worth it?
- Per the comments, emphatically yes — "I'd go to Nikko just for the fried yuba manju" is a recurring sentiment, and Nikko-born commenters added dango, annin tofu, cheesecake and yokan picks of their own, naming 25+ shops and dishes across the thread.
- When should you avoid a Nikko day trip?
- If you have hay fever, avoid cedar-pollen season in late winter and early spring — a 562-like comment warns that clouds of yellow pollen blow off the cedars around Toshogu and will send you straight back down the mountain. The video itself was filmed in early March.
- Is Cheese Garden a Nikko brand?
- No — a 193-like correction points out the cheesecake brand is actually from Nasu, and another commenter adds it has Tokyo branches, so there's little reason to spend Nikko stomach space on it. The cheesecake commenters send you to instead is Meiji no Yakata's Nirvana.

The fried yuba manju is the real deal — everyone needs to eat it!!! It's good enough that I'd go to Nikko just for the fried yuba manju. I love the stuff.
Tochigi local here! I'd seen him go harsh on other fried yuba manju before, so I was bracing for my favorite, Sakaeya, to get torn apart — and he actually praised it. So happy!
The fried yuba manju was so good I stood right there at the storefront going "so good, so good" while eating it. Eat it fresh when they hand it to you — don't take it home!
You went to Nikko and didn't go to Yuzawaya?! Their sake manju is the best in Japan! If you get takeout you can buy them freshly steamed. Next time, please. The shaved ice in summer is great too.
Born and raised in Nikko: Kihei's mizu-yokan and Hishiya's yokan tend to sell out fast. Yuzawaya's manju divides opinion a bit, but pretty much everyone from Nikko loves it.
Please do a taste-off of the mizu-yokan from Yoshidaya, Kihei, Mitsuyama and Watahan!
It's more souvenir than street food, but as a local I can't recommend Mitsuyama Yokan Honpo's mizu-yokan enough.
I want you to try Meiji no Yakata's cheesecake.
I love the Nirvana cheesecake and the financiers from Meiji no Yakata right next to Tobu-Nikko Station. I buy them on every business trip and eat them on the express home. Locals recommend them all the time.
For dango in Nikko it's Miyamae Dango!!! Mifuku Dango is the new kid that a soba shop started 😂
Nikko Suien's annin tofu is delicious! Head west along the same street and you'll hit Ishidaya, the main shop for Jingoro senbei, which sells all the offbeat variations 🍘
Cheese Garden is actually from Nasu. It's not even Nikko, I'm afraid…
Cheese Garden has branches in Tokyo too — is there really any need to stop there in Nikko?
By the way, if you have hay fever, do not go to Nikko Toshogu this time of year. You'll witness the majestic sight of yellow powder blowing off the cedars — and immediately have to head back down the mountain.
I'm a local, but the really good places… those I can't share.
