310 Places Japanese Locals Actually Named — The Full Index
日本人が実際に名前を挙げた310か所 — 全索引
Japanese travel advice in English is written almost entirely by visitors. This index is not: every one of these 310 places was named by a Japanese person, in Japanese, in a public comment section, with other Japanese people voting on the answer. We went through 75 of those comment sections, translated 1,110 comments, and indexed every place that came up — by city, with the article and the source video behind each one.
How this index was built
Every entry below comes from a Japanese-language YouTube comment section. We went through the comments under 75 Japanese videos about travel in Japan — comment sections holding 62,246 comments between them — and excerpted 1,110 of them, translating each one and keeping its real like count intact. Those 1,110 quoted comments carry 873,324 likes between them. Along the way Japanese commenters named 310 distinct places. This page is the index of all of them.
What makes this different from an English guidebook list: nobody here visited on a press trip, and nobody is recommending a place they were paid to visit. These are the places Japanese people named to each other, in Japanese, in public, with other Japanese people voting the answers up or down. We translate and count. We do not review, and we do not scrape Google Maps or Tabelog — see the methodology page for exactly what we do and don't do.
Caveat worth stating plainly: a place being named here means Japanese commenters named it, not that we verified it is open, good, or still priced the way a commenter said. Comment sections go stale. Every entry links back to the article it came from, and every article links back to the source video, so you can check the date and read the original yourself.
How we count: the index lists 318 entries, because eight places were named in two different articles each. Treating two entries as the same place when they share a name, a Japanese name or a map query gives 310 distinct places — that is the figure in the title.
A note on the grouping: sections are named for the city an article is anchored to, and include that city's neighbourhoods and its usual day-trip range — a roundup of quiet onsen near Tokyo sits under Tokyo even though the baths themselves are in Gunma. Articles that genuinely span several regions are grouped under Nationwide & multi-region instead.
