Is Nijo Market a Ripoff? Sapporo Locals Say "Not One Yen in 29 Years"

The most-liked local comment (156 likes) under a Japanese market-crawl video is a 29-year Sapporo resident saying they've walked past Nijo Market countless times and never spent a single yen there — and residents of 25 and 33 years line up to say the same. Across 834 comments the consensus is blunt: the seafood bowls are tourist pricing ("3,000–4,000 yen!?" drew a 111-like double-take), pushed up by inbound demand, while locals buy their sashimi at the supermarket or eat conveyor-belt sushi. There are honest nuances — a neighbor still buys shellfish there for less than the supermarket — and the comments name exactly which chains Sapporo actually trusts for seafood instead.

I've lived in Sapporo for 29 years and walked through countless times — I've never spent a single yen there.

What locals said (excerpted from 834)

  • Sapporo local here — I've never bought a thing. As far as I'm concerned it's purely for tourists. The shops barely even differ in what they sell.

  • I've lived in Sapporo for about 25 years and I've never been once. Please don't take this place as the standard 😂

  • Same — 33 years here, never been, never spent a single yen 😂 I just walk straight past it.

  • My dad's family is in Sapporo, and I took my own family back this summer. When I said I wanted to try Nijo Market, the entire clan shut it down: "Absolutely don't — no local ever goes there." Thanks for testing it for us (;^_^A

  • The first shop's 2,000 yen seafood bowl… with that presentation… that's a no from me 😅

  • I heard they revised prices a bit once COVID cut off the tourists. Foreign visitors kept paying even at high prices, so prices just kept climbing. Locals don't go — and for seafood we mostly eat sushi rather than seafood bowls anyway.

  • I've been to Nijo Market a few times — buying seafood there didn't feel like a ripoff at all, and they'll even throw in extras if you haggle 😃 The seafood bowls, though — the contents looked like ripoff territory, so I've never eaten one (lol)

  • I live in the neighborhood — shellfish is actually cheaper than the supermarket, so I do go there to buy it 🎵 And Oiso is good, so when friends visit from Honshu I sometimes take them 😊

  • A market obaachan told me on my high-school trip: "Don't buy boiled crab unless they boil it right in front of you! Ours is boiled where everyone can see, so it's safe." This video finally made me understand why.

Where locals go instead

  • When you ask locals here where to eat seafood, they tell you to go to the popular conveyor-belt sushi chains like Hanamaru or Toriton… which tells you everything.

  • If you're eating seafood in Sapporo, just go to Toriton, the conveyor-belt sushi chain.

  • Not a market tip, but staff at the outer wholesale market once recommended me the conveyor-belt sushi chains Toriton, Nagoyaka-tei and Nemuro Hanamaru — would love to see you try those.

  • The right answer for Hokkaido seafood is to eat it in the coastal towns. In Sapporo, go for ramen or soup curry instead — Otaru and Tomakomai have plenty of good spots.

FAQ

Is Nijo Market in Sapporo worth visiting?
For a seafood bowl, locals say no — the most-liked comments are Sapporo residents of 25 to 33 years saying they have never spent a yen there, and that the bowls (around 3,000–4,000 yen as of the comments) are tourist pricing. Browsing, shellfish shopping and haggling for crab get a pass.
Where do Sapporo locals actually eat seafood?
Conveyor-belt sushi chains, overwhelmingly. Commenters repeatedly name Toriton, Nagoyaka-tei and Nemuro Hanamaru — one notes that when you ask locals for seafood tips they point you to these chains, "which tells you everything" (31 likes). Others say the real answer is eating in coastal towns like Otaru or Tomakomai.
Is anything at Nijo Market itself worth eating?
A few things survive the verdict: Daruma-ken, the shoyu-ramen shop commenters call Sapporo's oldest, gets named as what to eat instead of a seafood bowl; a neighborhood local says shellfish is cheaper than the supermarket and rates Oiso; and one market vendor's rule — only buy boiled crab where they boil it in front of you (69 likes).
Why is seafood so expensive at Sapporo's tourist markets?
Commenters blame inbound tourism: visitors kept paying high prices, so prices kept climbing, with only a slight correction when COVID cut tourist traffic (19 likes). Locals themselves buy fresh sashimi at the supermarket or eat conveyor-belt sushi, so the market stalls price for tourists, not residents.
