Where Fukuoka's Ramen Fans Actually Eat — and Why Ichiran Never Comes Up
By Rakutaro · Tokyo, Japan

Ask Fukuoka's ramen fans to name their shop and the comment section turns into a ballot box: 1,852 comments of shop names, where the second most-liked reply (1,705 likes) is about the shop nobody named — Ichiran, the tonkotsu chain tourists queue for. One Fukuoka local insists it tastes fine; it's just too expensive for something they eat every week, and tourist-famous ShinShin goes unmentioned too. The most-liked comment of all (2,166 likes) is "The Umakatchan my mom used to make" — instant ramen, because in Fukuoka tonkotsu is daily food, not a destination. Almost every local named a different shop, and one first-time visitor ended up eating eight bowls trying to settle it. Below, the shops they actually vouched for — starting with a sub-¥300 bowl.
“Not a single mention of Ichiran. That's how you know these picks are legit.”

FAQ
- Do Fukuoka locals actually eat at Ichiran?
- Mostly no, and the comments treat that as the tell. In the top 200 of 1,852 comments naming favorite shops, Ichiran never comes up, and "Not a single mention of Ichiran. That's how you know these picks are legit" drew 1,705 likes. One Fukuoka local stresses it tastes fine but is too expensive for an everyday bowl, so they simply go elsewhere.
- Where do locals in Fukuoka actually eat ramen?
- The shops vouched for in the comments: Hakataya (bowls under ¥300, per a 42-like comment), Kurume's Taiho Ramen and Mohikan, Menya Gaga, Yakuin's Hatchan Ramen and Unari. Tellingly, almost everyone named a different neighborhood shop — the real consensus is "the place you grew up eating."

Wild that every single one of them named a different shop.
This is the real deal. When ramen is baked into your everyday diet you can't ignore cost either, and the shop you've eaten at forever ends up being the best ramen there is.
So it's true what they say about locals not being Ichiran fans 🤔
I'm from Fukuoka — Ichiran tastes good, we just don't pick it because it's too expensive. No need to dunk on the taste.
It's not just Ichiran — ShinShin, the other shop that got famous with tourists, isn't in here either. That's how you know this is the real thing.
