"It's Not That Ichiran Is Bad, It's That Better Shops Exist": Is Ichiran Worth It, According to Japanese Ramen Fans

In a 2023 thread with 6,145 comments, the most-liked reply (9,231 likes) is from someone in Fukuoka: Ichiran isn't bad, it's genuinely good, but Fukuoka gets better tonkotsu for less. The second (8,231 likes) is blunter: the problem isn't Ichiran, it's that better shops exist. The math they keep doing out loud is the kaedama, the extra noodles: the bowl was 980 yen then and the refill 210 yen (1,963 and 1,484 likes), while the shop next door charges the same and throws in free rice (835 likes). The defence is real too, from an ex-employee on hygiene (770 likes) to the one-person booth (744). And one reply draws the line that matters most if you're visiting, plus the shops they'd send you to instead.

These comments are from a video published in 2023. Prices, rules and crowds may have moved since; anything we checked ourselves is marked with a source.

Speaking as someone from Fukuoka, Ichiran definitely isn't bad, it's actually good, but in Fukuoka you can eat better ramen for less.

  • It's not that Ichiran is bad. It's that there are better shops out there.

  • The portion assumes you're going to order kaedama, and then the kaedama is 200 yen. That's rough.

  • It's not the 980 yen bowl, it's the 210 yen kaedama that gets me.

  • It's not 980 yen, it's 980 plus a 200 yen kaedama before you've had a normal portion, and some people need two. No toppings and you're already over 1,000 yen, and for this taste? It's perfectly good, but there are countless shops at the same level.

  • It's less that Ichiran is expensive and more that the ramen shops around it charge the same, give you more and put out free rice, so you end up drawn to those instead.

  • These days I'm completely fine paying 1,000 yen for ramen. It's just that this isn't a 1,000 yen bowl.

  • 700 yen is the fair price.

  • There aren't many places left where you can eat ramen for 700 yen. Flour has gotten expensive.

  • I worked at Ichiran back in high school, and they really are strict about hygiene. I used to think while working there that this is the kind of place I'd want to eat at as a customer, so even after quitting I still end up going a lot. It's good, too.

  • Honestly grateful that they give you a place where you can eat without having to face anybody.

  • You never have to say a word, nobody is looking at you, and you can eat good ramen quietly at your own pace. That system is where the value is.

  • For someone who doesn't eat much ramen normally, Ichiran is plenty good, the place is clean, and you get your own space to eat in. With all of that included, it's worth 980 yen.

  • I think it tastes good, I think the service is good, and I go every now and then, but if someone tells me it's expensive, I've got nothing to say back.

  • That's how it is in Fukuoka. Nationwide, though, it really isn't.

  • It's good, but the value isn't great. I only go when every other ramen shop is shut and I really want ramen.

  • The way I see it, you're there to enjoy Ichiran the attraction.

Where Japanese visitors go instead

  • Fukuoka has any number of ramen shops that are cheaper and better than Ichiran.

  • When I'm in Fukuoka city, I'd sooner go to Ganso Nagahamaya than Ichiran.

  • Hakataya is 700 yen cheaper than Ichiran and way better.

  • I've been going to a place called Hakata Tenjin a lot lately, and I've gotten used to the value: 650 yen a bowl with the first kaedama free, 100 yen from the second one on.

FAQ

Is Ichiran worth it?
It depends on what you're buying it for. Japanese diners agree the ramen is good (9,231 likes) but say it is priced like a better bowl (455 likes), and that the value sits in the system rather than the noodles: your own booth, nobody watching you, no need to speak (744 and 255 likes). For people who rarely eat ramen, that package is worth the money (157 likes).
Why is Ichiran so expensive?
Two things stack up. The bowl is small enough that most people order kaedama, the extra noodles, and at Ichiran that refill is one of the priciest around (1,963 and 1,484 likes), while nearby shops charge the same for the bowl, serve more and add free rice (835 likes). Those prices are from the 2023 video, when the bowl was 980 yen and a kaedama 210 yen. Ichiran announced another price revision at some branches from 1 July 2026 and asks customers to check the ticket machine in store.

Do you have to order kaedama at Ichiran?
You don't, but the portion is built around it. Japanese regulars describe the standard bowl as about half a meal on its own, with the refill turning it into a normal serving (184 likes), and say a satisfying visit can run close to 2,000 yen once you add a couple (186 likes). A tip that surfaced repeatedly: order your first bowl with firm noodles, then switch to normal firmness for the kaedama, because the broth has cooled by then (8 likes).
Where do Japanese ramen fans go instead of Ichiran?
In Fukuoka, almost anywhere else. Japanese diners insist the city is full of cheaper, better tonkotsu (171 likes), naming Ganso Nagahamaya as the swap (33 likes) and calling Hakataya 700 yen cheaper and far better (19 likes). In Tokyo the equivalent move is a budget tonkotsu chain like Hakata Tenjin, 650 yen with the first refill free (4 likes). Outside Fukuoka the calculus changes, and one reply says so flatly: that complaint holds in Fukuoka, not nationwide (320 likes).
