Is Hiroshima Okonomiyaki Worth It? Locals Say Skip the Famous Shops — "The Tiny Neighborhood Joints Are Several Times Better, and Cheaper"

Under a viral rundown of Hiroshima's four most famous okonomiyaki shops, the top local comment (438 likes) says the obviously tourist-oriented picks lose to the tiny neighborhood joints, which are "several times tastier — and cheaper." "These are all shops locals don't go to" (205 likes) sums up the pushback, but the tone is affectionate, not angry: every Hiroshima native keeps a personal favorite shop (331 likes), the really good ones stay secret so they don't get crowded (157 likes), and okonomiyaki is supposed to be an everyday ¥700 niku-tama-soba, not something you queue for. A few regulars push back — famous Hassho and Koshida really are that good, they say — and locals name a dozen real shops they'd send you to instead.

These are all shops locals don't go to.
— @amamamamamamo1539205 likesFor tourists, this lineup is a solid 100 points. The nice thing about Hiroshima's okonomiyaki scene is that the genuinely great shops locals go to and the tourist-facing shops are completely separate worlds.
— @am-sh7xe88 likesEvery Hiroshima local has found a shop they're attached to. Everyone's different, and everyone's right.
— @セプテンバーさん-v5s331 likesEvery Hiroshima local has at least one personal favorite okonomiyaki shop.
— @うまい棒コンポタ味-p5t150 likesI can't tell you where the really good shops are. They'd get crowded!!
— @ひろきち-h6l157 likesPeople from Hiroshima don't really name a recommended shop — they just say everywhere is good. At the very least, nobody has ever actively pushed the shops in this video on me. If you keep pressing, they'll finally go "well, then..." and offer up Hassho or something.
— @denkitoudai19 likesUs Hiroshima folks figure our favorite shops are already good and busy enough, and we don't want them any more crowded — so when people keep asking, we just casually palm them off with one of the famous places.
— @Tjapan2419 likesSo expensive! Okonomiyaki should just be a ¥700-or-so niku-tama-soba.
— @GORILLA_GORILLA_GORILLA157 likesThe tourist shops may well be tasty, but the small local places really are better. These days ¥1,000+ a pancake with fresh-made noodles is normal, and it's too expensive to make me want to eat it lol. The old-school places use supermarket packet noodles and they're absolutely fine! You can still get a niku-tama-soba for ¥600 or ¥700.
4 likes"Nagaregawa" → ✕. "Nagarekawa" → ○. And it's a shame to see okonomiyaki eaten off a plate with chopsticks.
— @ごはんおかず-r9x107 likesI work around there, and Hassho and Koshida really are delicious. People say locals don't go, but I went all the time. Of course I love my own neighborhood place — but if you just wander around, there are little shops everywhere, so I'd also recommend ignoring the review apps and diving into one. They're seriously filling, so be careful if you're ordering other food too! One thing though: locals do not put oysters on top.
— @oishi-harahetta17 likesHassho is genuinely good. The okonomiyaki places in the station building prioritize turnover, so the cooking is sloppy and not that tasty. Taste in okonomiyaki is personal and recommendations are hard — that's why Hassho is the safe, can't-go-wrong pick people tend to suggest to tourists.
— @カーペー-x3s16 likesHassho is the one I'll forgive — they genuinely care about their craft. Koshida → small and pricey. Okonomimura → would basically never go. Reichan → haven't been in ages.

Where locals go instead
The best okonomiyaki is at the place on the edge of town run by one obachan on her own!
333 likesMost of these are tourist-facing shops. The places locals actually go look like the ground floor of somebody's house. I recommend Okonomi Farm in Saeki Ward!
— @なっちゃん-k8b34 likesIt's away from the city center, but I love Kaede and Negian out in Asaminami Ward.
35 likesHassho is the well-grilled crispy style, Koshida makes a smaller one you have after drinks, Sanpachi hits you with garlic — every shop grills differently, so the taste is completely different. Please try comparing them when you come to Hiroshima! My own picks are Jotaro in Inarimachi (between Nagarekawa and Hiroshima Station) and Yotchan in Kyobashi (next to the APA Hotel by the Hiroshima Ekimae Bridge)!
— @morrow02029 likesQ in Yamamoto! It's near my family home and we've been going for over 20 years. Giita [SoftBank star Yuki Yanagita] apparently kept going there through his university days too — his spikes are on display in the shop. I've lived away for 15 years now, but whenever I'm back in Hiroshima my family always goes.

FAQ
- Is Hiroshima okonomiyaki worth trying?
- Emphatically yes — for Hiroshima locals it's an everyday staple, not a delicacy. Even the sceptics in the comments concede the famous shops are "a solid 100 points for tourists" (88 likes); the consensus is simply that the genuinely great local shops and the tourist-facing ones are two separate worlds.
- Where do Hiroshima locals actually eat okonomiyaki?
- At small neighborhood joints — "the place on the edge of town run by one obachan" (333 likes) — often the ground floor of somebody's house. Shops locals named in the comments include Okonomi Farm in Saeki Ward, Kaede and Negian in Asaminami, Jotaro in Inarimachi, Yotchan in Kyobashi, and Q in Gion.
- How much does okonomiyaki cost in Hiroshima?
- As of the comments, locals treat roughly ¥600–700 as the right price for a niku-tama-soba (pork, egg and noodles) at a neighborhood shop, and grumble that famous-shop pancakes made with fresh noodles now top ¥1,000. Check each shop's map listing for current prices.
- Is Hassho a tourist trap?
- Locals are split. The thread's default is that the famous shops are for tourists, but several regulars push back: "Hassho and Koshida really are delicious — people say locals don't go, but I went all the time" (17 likes), and even a sceptic allows that "Hassho is the one I'll forgive — they genuinely care about their craft." The station-building shops draw the most criticism for rushed, turnover-first cooking.
Is Himeji's Ekisoba Worth It? "Not Amazing — It Just Puts You at Ease," Locals Say
“No flattery — it's a comforting taste. I live in Kyushu and only make it to Kansai a few times a year on business, but I go every time I'm in Kobe, and I'll happily detour from Osaka for it. It's that comforting. It's not that it's spectacularly delicious or anything. It just genuinely puts you at ease.”

44,729 likesFood & RestaurantsYouTube"Amazed It Hasn't Gone Under": Japan's Verdict on Arashiyama's Most Notorious Tourist-Trap Cafe
The most-liked of 3,243 comments under Japan's bluntest food reviewer's visit to Ransui Coffee — the ornate Arashiyama cafe that made national news in 2024 for serving resold cakes from Chatraise, a budget chain where most cakes cost ¥300–350 — is pure disbelief: "My only impression is that it still hasn't gone under" (44,729 likes). What the review found on the plate: supermarket yogurt served in its original store container (19,708 likes on "I've never seen anything like this") and microwaved everything. One commenter explains how it survives: the clientele is one-time tourists, and the prices aren't extreme enough for the police to touch (582). The thread's warning doesn't stop at one shop — Arashiyama has more like it.

13,133 likesFood & RestaurantsYouTubeZen Kashoin: The Kyoto Cafe Japan's Harshest Dessert Reviewer Couldn't Fault
When Japan's most notoriously blunt dessert reviewer visited Zen Kashoin — a confectionery cafe in a 300-year-old machiya just north of Karasuma-Oike — he praised every single thing, and the 620-comment thread treats it as an event: the top comment (13,133 likes) is disbelief that food this good, in a room this beautiful, costs this little, and another admits "seeing him praise everything makes me worried someone slipped him ¥10 million" (1,933). Regulars and Kyoto locals pile in to confirm — the courtyard weeping cherry, the service, the castella — and one local's aside points to a whole quieter Kyoto a few blocks up from the tourist crush.

1,722 likesFood & RestaurantsYouTubeWhat Is Nikusui? Osaka's Hangover Soup Was Born at Chitose in Namba — "Beef Udon, Hold the Udon"
Nikusui — "beef udon, hold the udon" — was born at Chitose, a small udon shop beside Osaka's Namba Grand Kagetsu theater, and under a Japanese video about it the top comment (1,722 likes) calls the result "a masterful bowl: great beef, a distinctive method, real labor in it." The comments retell the origin the way Osaka tells it: hungover comedian Hanaki Kyo wanted something light, ordered his niku udon without the noodles, and the kitchen simply said yes — "answering that order is godlike service; that's how you know it's a good shop" (721 likes). Regulars vouch it stayed the real thing ("nikusui anywhere else isn't nikusui"), warn the once-casual counter now draws serious lines, and point beginners to the tamago-kake rice pairing.

When a ranking of foods you shouldn't eat on trains put Osaka's beloved 551 Horai pork buns near the top, 713 comments turned it into a love letter: the top reply (1,552 likes) rules that 551 isn't offensive — it's meshi-tero, "food terrorism," the smell that makes everyone else hungry. The consensus is a running Kansai joke with real etiquette inside it: catch a whiff of pork bun on an Osaka train and there is a 100% chance someone's holding the red-and-white 551 bag (439 likes), you don't even have to open it for the whole car to know (414), and the homebound Shinkansen hisses with beer cans and steam anyway. Where the line actually sits, the comments explain too.
