• I mean, is there any point interviewing "young people in Tokyo"? They don't own a car, don't drink, don't even have a license in the first place. The concept of "a suspension would hurt" doesn't seem to exist for them.

• There have been fatal accidents where a bike hit a pedestrian, and being in a state where you can't ride properly is dangerous. I want them to keep cracking down on the bad cases.

• Even without a car license, on your second violation you have to attend a course, and the course fee is about 6,000 yen. Ignore that and it's a fine of up to 50,000 yen.

• Staff should probably stop asking (when a customer orders alcohol) "You're not driving a car, are you?" and ask "You're not driving a car or riding a bicycle, are you?" instead.

• It's a transition period, so you have to be careful. Long-haul truck drivers all used to drive while drinking, and newspaper delivery guys didn't wear helmets, none of them, until about the mid-Heisei years. Riding double on a bicycle was a staple of coming-of-age movies and dramas. It's just the way the times move, so all you can do is accept that's how it is and adapt.

• Just push it home. Back in the day I'd go to drinking parties on a scooter and walk it home. Police saw me plenty of times, and all they did was look. However wasted I got, I never got a ticket and never got stopped.

Is it illegal to ride a bicycle after drinking in Japan?

Since November 1, 2024, Japan's Road Traffic Act punishes riding a bicycle with alcohol in your system with up to three years in prison or a fine of up to 500,000 yen, the same scale as for a car.
